Strikingly blue and sweet! One sip and you'll taste that delicious coconut and pop of fruit juices. Nothing like a tropical mocktail to quickly transport you to a tropical island and the sound of waves in the distance.
The Blue Hawaiian Cocktail is one of the best tropical drinks in the world. A perfect bright blue color cocktail that's a must on a hot day in summer. Essentially, this cocktail is a colorful variation of the popular Pina Colada.
The perfect garnishment would be a pineapple wedge, maraschino cherry, and a chair propped poolside!
My husband and I don't typically order alcoholic drinks, but if there is a blue cocktail on the menu, he is sure to order it. When we first met, I thought it was kind of a silly thing to do, but now I can't stop seeing blue drinks everywhere! I have to say, I am a fan of the blue drink.
Definitely one to make at your next party! A fun drink for summertime and popular for blue-themed baby showers. Some of my other summertime favorites are the Mai Tai, Pina Colada, and a sweet Strawberry Daiquiri.
Ingredients For a Blue Hawaiian Mocktail
- Coconut syrup - Instead of coconut rum or any light rum, for this recipe, we will use a non-alcoholic coconut syrup. Becketts Non-Alcoholic Spirits have a NA Coconut Rum that you can use in place of the coconut syrup.
- Pineapple juice - Opt for pure pineapple juice and not a pineapple juice cocktail drink.
- Non-Alcoholic Blue Curaçao- Monin makes a non-alcoholic Blue Curaçao syrup that you can easily find online.
- Cream of Coconut - Don't mistake this for Coconut Cream, they are NOT the same. Coconut cream is very thick and unsweetened. Cream of Coconut is syrupy and sweet. They are not interchangeable. Coco Lopez is a great brand. For this recipe, I'll be using Coco Real Cream of Coconut. I like this squeeze bottle option!
- Fresh lemon juice - Use a handheld fruit juicer to get the maximum amount of juice. If necessary, bottled lemon juice will work too.
- Crushed ice - Crushed ice from your refrigerator works well, or you can use a blender to crush whole ice cubes to your desired "crush-ness".
- Garnish: Fresh pineapple slices and maraschino cherries
How To Make An Alcohol Free Blue Hawaiian
- In a cocktail shaker add ice, coconut syrup, pineapple juice, blue curaçao, cream of coconut, and lemon juice.
- Shake to combine and chill the ingredients
- Add crushed ice to a rocks glass. Strain the drink into the glass over the ice.
- Garnish with a pineapple slice and a maraschino cherry.
Make It A Slushy!
Making a slushy is incredibly simple! Add all the ingredients in a blender, and crushed ice. Blend on high speed until you've reached slushy consistency. Pour into your chosen glass and garnish with pineapple wedges and a cherry! I've been known to drop a Swedish fish or two inside, for some extra fruity flavors.
Blue Hawaiian vs Blue Hawaii
You can see why these two blue drinks might get confused.
Blue Hawaii- Bartender Harry Yee created this drink in 1957. A Blue Hawaii is made with rum (sometimes vodka), pineapple juice, blue curaçao, and sweet and sour mix.
Blue Hawaiian- Also called the "Swimming Pool" is essentially a Pina Colada, with added blue curacao to give it some orange flavor and blue color.
Traditionally made with a light-colored rum, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and lemon juice. Give Creme De Coconut a try as well for even more coconut flavor.
Non-Alcoholic Alternatives To Level Up Your Mocktail
Add some extra jazz and flavor by using a white rum alternative. Here are some of my favorite options that would be great for this Blue Hawaiian recipe.
